In my last post, I highlighted the biggest reason why I thought
the Trojans lost last night.
But, despite the loss, the Trojans can bounce back.
In order to bounce back though, the Trojans need to play
smarter.
Yes, they play defense
and they rebound. But that is only two of the three main components of
basketball.
They need to be better offensively.
What I mean by this is that they need to be more efficient.
Currently they are one of the top scoring teams in the
country because they run the floor and get offensive rebounds.
Which is good, but they need to be more efficient.
Often times I’ll see them play at home or hear them on the
radio and they are taking shots early into the shot clock or are taking the
first good look that they find.
And that is just a product of the system that head coach
Chanda Rigby runs.
And that system has worked for a couple of years now. But this
system has been at its best when efficient.
And this can be seen earlier this season when the Trojans
beat the Alabama State Hornets by 70
points, 116 to 46.
In that game the Trojans shot 50% from the floor and shot 45%
from three while still reaching their average of 51 rebounds that game.
I was there covering this game when it happened, and remembered
thinking about what could be for this team if they could be this efficient.
Fast forward to today, and I’m still wondering about what
could be, and wondering if this team can put the pieces together.
Only time will tell on whether or not this team can take the
next step. But it starts tomorrow against Arkansas State.
In the last matchup between these two teams, the Trojans won
87 to 79 on the back of Amber Rivers. The same person who just shot 1 for 11
last night.
In that game she was efficient and shot 9 for 14 and had 24
points in that close win.
And that’s all that this team needs to do as a whole.
And its not on just one person.
They need to focus on taking good open shots, but also
making those good open shots.
And if they can do that, this team could be in store for
another conference championship and NCAA tournament bid.
But the KEY, is EFFICIENCY.
